This view dating from 1947 is changed beyond recognition now (2008). The Aitken Pit closed in 1963 but in 1947 it was one of the largest pits complexes in the area also consisting of a power station which was built after the First World War to supply power to 13 other Fife Coal Company pits. After 1948 the coolong towers were concrtee but at the date of this painting they were still wooden structures. The bing was noteable for its deep crimson colour
