Scalloway Castle, built in 1600 by Earl Patrick Stewart, went into terminal decline as long ago as 1754. Once a grand building on its own spit of land it is now surrounded by reclaimed ground and modern buildings and harbour developments which detract from its original grandeur.

This painting dates from a summer visit to Shetland in July 1948
