Much of the housing was mid-19th century (or earlier) and of a low standard. During the 1950s the town council agreed a radical programme of reconstruction which saw much demolition and new building. There was no regard for sentimental preservation. This view of Heggie's Wynd from 1950, looking towards the Esplanade, shows the extreme dilapidation of parts of the Linktown area at that time
