*The watermark is for internet copyright purposes only and will not appear on the purchased printAlthough the name "St Abbs" suggests antiquity (and, indeed, the name is derived from the 7th Century Northumbrian Princess, Ebba) the village actually only dates back to the beginning of the 19th century and the community only developed any significance in 1833 when the Ushers of Edinburgh constructed a fishing station. It is closely tied to Coldingham (inland) but the name St Abbs was chosen to ensure that it was clear that these were two separate communities. The harbour at St Abbs is still a busy place recreationally but at the date of this painting (1956) it was still principally a working fishing port.
