St. David's Harbour was originally built in 1752 as an outlet for coal produced at Fordell. A Customs House was also constructed since this was both an exporting and importing harbour. St Davids was also important for military reasons in the 20th Century being near to the naval base at Rosyth and being adjacent to the Royal Naval Air Station at Donibristle (active from 1917).

This area is now completely changed by major housing development.

The artist was still in the RAF when he painted this scene in July 1945.
