This is a view of Charlotte Street (between High Street and Esplanade) looking West towards High Street and Whytehouse Avenue from the junction with Cowan Street. These buildings - the area was full of 19th century artisans' dwellings - were already in serious decay (and some were demolished) in the 1950s but demolition was not completed until the late 60s/early 70s to make way for the new Mercat Shopping Centre.

The old Philp School on Thistle Street (just visible middle distance) dating from 1850, escaped demolition and still exists
