The 1950s saw redevelopment on a fairly substantial scale in Linktown and other parts near the Esplanade. This accelerated during the 1960s with compulsory purchase orders (in 1964) on property between High Street and the Esplanade. This ultimately led to wholesale demolition of Thistle Street, Cowan Street, Rose Street and Market Street to make way for the building of the Mercat Shopping Centre between 1971 and 1973
