The main building in this picture was built as the Port Brae Cinema and opened in November 1913. It was still a cinema well into the 1930s and very probably through the war years. After serving as a custom-built cinema the building was used by a plumbers' merchant until its demolition in the 1960s. It was replaced by a filling station and this in turn was replaced by a car sales company which still (2008) operates on this site. The removal of the cinema made this a much more open area as did the demolition of St James' Church built in 1842 (on the harbour side of the junction) and demolished in the 1970s
The large window replaced what was originally the rather ornate entrance to the building when it was a cinema.
