This scene at High Street and Cross Street (painted in July 1949) has changed little over the years although some old buildings in the surrounding area were ripped down without any thought about conservation and preservation in the early 1970s.
The Town Hall, built in 1887 to mark Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, replaced the original Hall built in 1617. The adjacent Tolbooth dates from 1576
