This view is now much improved with the harbour having been rejuvenated - now considered to be one of the most picturesque outside the East Neuk of Fife - and the Pan Ha' 17th Century houses, once very run down, being superbly renovated in the 1960s. When the painting was made in 1949 this was a run-down part of Kirkcaldy with close connections with the coal mining industry. In the background, behind the tower, can be seen surface gear belonging to the long-gone Lady Blanche Pit and to the left centre can be seen part of Dysart House which became a closed Carmelite monastery in 1931
