West Wemyss is now a well-preserved and picturesque coastal village with many attractive restored buildings, including a splendid Tolbooth, and new builds which sympathetically complement the general architectural style.
In 1949, the date of this picture of the junction of Coxstool and Main Street (a view which remains largely unchanged) West Wemyss was very much a village in decline and somewhat run down. Its main industry had been servicing exports of coal from the Lochgelly coalfields but most of this work had been diverted to Methil.
