The Old Philp School - situated on the seaward side of Links Street and just South of Bell Wynd - was opened in 1828 as part of a bequest from Bailie Robert Philp. Philp was a wealthy linen manufacturer who left a large amount to help the poor educate their children. This became less necessary with the passage of the Education Act in 1872 and this and other Philp schools closed in 1890. The building in the 1894 OS map is referred to as the "Town Mission Hall".

This marvellous building was demolished in 1966 as part of the 'improvement' and redevelopment of Linktown. A photograph from the same perspective is viewable on the Kirkcaldy Civic Society website
