By the 1990s it had become residential rather than agricultural with a population of less than 100. It lies in a picturesque location on a hillside near the Sea, 6 miles southeast of Dunbar and just West of Cockburnspath. This painting is of the schoolhouse across the village green with the Mercat Cross very much in evidence. For those with an interest in music the pioneering piano designer and builder, John Broadwood (1732-1812), came from this small community.
