"One of the paintings of (Pettycur) pier shows Burntisland in the distance as a grey silhouette, with rain obviously pouring down. I will always remember ... the rain lashing down until I was completely soaked, trying to control the flood of water... while I put on the colour!"

(The Artist, article in The Scots Magazine, January 1974)

Pettycur was an important harbour for ferries from Edinburgh and Leith from 1760 until its rapid decline in the 1840s when Burntisland became the main ferry port linked with Granton and serving the new rapidly expanding North British railway.
