The winter of 1947 was perhaps the worst in terms of prolonged extreme weather in the entire 20th Century, the previous equivalent being in 1883 and the closest to it in the same century being in 1962/1963. There was much disruption and misery (compounded by coal shortages) for nearly three months between January and March
