The Lochgelly Iron and Coal Company sank the Nellie shaft beside the road to Ballingry in 1880. After a chequered start when it was closed for a number of years in the 1890s the Nellie was deepened and opened again in 1903. It was eventually closed after a fire in 1965 and all trace had disappeared by the early 1970s as part of the massive and landscape-changing Country Park/Lochore Meadows project.
The style and colouring of this picture is almost surreal.
