The Nellie shaft was sunk in 1880 north of Lochgelly and next to the road to Ballingry. After an active period of some 13 years it was closed but deepened and reopened again in 1903. It lasted until 1965 when an undergound fire resulted in permanent closure. The derelict buildings were all gone by the early 1970s - a result of the extensive Lochore Meadows reclamation which virtually removed all signs of colliery activity in the Lochgelly area
