The small town of Leslie had two main industries in the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. - paper and flax manufacture. At Prinlaws, on the western side of Leslie and on the River Leven, there were two flax mills - both water and power-driven - and bleaching fields built and owned by John Fergus. The image of the flax mill was painted in the summer of 1951. This building was demolished during the early 1960s
